| San Fernando High School student Albert Avila, left, Director of Dental Research Institute Dr. David Wong, and Garr High School student Gipson Lyles stand inside UCLA's School of Dentistry. The pair is part of a group of High School seniors that are spending their summer vacations working side-by-side with experienced scientists on real-world health problems in the UCLA dental school's inaugural year of its pre-college science education program. This is the only program of its kind funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, with the intention of getting kids from underrepresented backgrounds thinking early about possible careers in dentistry and science. |
